The next Galaxy phone, which could just be the Samsung Galaxy S III will be running the Exynos 4 Quad processor, revealed the South Korean manufacturer. The quad core application processor will be unveiled along with the upcoming Galaxy device in May.
This application processor utilizes the 32nm High-k Metal Gate
(HKMG) low-power process technology and is capable of exceeding 1.4GHz
per core based on the ARM Cortex A9 quad core processor. This latest
CPU claims to increase the processing power by twofold, while
decreasing the energy consumption by up to 20 percent compared to the
45nm based Exynos 4 Dual.
The multi core processors are said to increase the multitasking
efficiency of tablets and smartphones as well as extend support to
heavy-load applications such as video editing, 3D games and more. The
hot-plug functionality for switching each of the cores on or off and
per core dynamic voltage and frequency scaling are basically
responsible for cutting down on the power consumption.
“The application processor is a crucial element in providing our
customers with a PC-like experience on mobile devices. Samsung’s next
Galaxy device, which will be officially announced soon, offers
uncompromised performance and ground breaking multi-tasking features,
thanks to Exynos 4 Quad’s powerful performance and efficient energy
management technology,” commented Hankil Yoon, Senior Vice President of Product Strategy Team, Samsung’s Mobile Communications Business.
As the latest processor and the widely used 4 Dual sport identical
form factors, companies can readily adopt the newer version without
design alterations or extra costs. Some features of the Exynos 4 Quad
include full HD 30 frames per second video codec engine to enable 1080p
video playback and recording, image signal processor interface and HDMI
support. The S5M8767 companion chip developed to be used in conjunction
with the processor, works towards controlling power output for
maximizing battery life.
The Exynos 4 Quad processor has entered mass production and will debut along with the next Galaxy phone, or the Samsung Galaxy S III, in May. It may be incorporated in handsets by other manufacturers too.
